I found this article about Vancouver radio competition (Stu Derdyn, Province) very interesting. Particularly, this quote:
Jeff O’Neill, The Fox: “You know what, not everybody out there wants to listen to a dance song or American Idol, and we don’t do that and never will. We believe that working-class guys are informed, want an irreverent look at public affairs, and aren’t all mulleted lunkheads if they want to hear rock.”
It is not just that they want to protect their listeners from being considered mere ‘Mulleted Lunkheads’ It’s that they call their listeners ‘working class.’
I have never heard a Canadian media company ever refer to class in marketing before.Canadian media usually takes pains to pretend class does not exist.It’s refreshing.Posted on January 26, 2009
