Billionaire oligarch/ex-KGB agent Alexander Lebedev has an audacious plan for the Evening Standard. Rather than print one afternoon edition for 50p, as it does now, the Izvestia Standard will print a full edition in the afternoon for 50p, then give the paper out free to homebound professionals at 7pm. The idea is to deal a blow to thelondonpaper and London Lite by sweeping up the advertiser-quality readers, who will prefer the full helping of City news and arts coverage, whilst leaving the dregs to the 20pg gossip-laden freebies.
